New Vessel Builds of the Hellenic Fire Brigade
In 2008, Neorion Shipyards in Syros island started the construction of 3 new firefighting vessels on behalf of the Hellenic Fire Brigade. When the hulls and aluminum superstructures were completed, the engineers of the shipyards came up with a problem that needed their attention. On the bridge decks of the 3 new constructions, due to heavy electronic and electrical equipment, there was not enough space for the installation of rock wool insulation which was originally specified for the thermal insulation needs of the vessels. In addition, they were facing big issues with the condensation of the aluminum surfaces. In late 2009, the project manager of the new builds, Mr. John Sikoutris, contacted our company to discuss possible solutions to their problem.
After a short discussion, it was decided that Mascoat Marine-DTM Thermal Insulating Coating was the only solution. It was agreed that the Shipyard will clean, with a light water jet, all the surfaces from oils and protective compounds, and Alkyonis Co will provide the necessary quantity of the material, perform and guarantee the proper application of Mascoat Marine-DTM.
A crew of two persons travelled to Syros island and completed the application. Originally, a light tack coat of 0,25mm was applied to ensure proper adhesion. Then, successive coats of 0,5mm DFT were sprayed on bulkheads and overheads, to a maximum total thickness of 1,5mm. A weekend time was enough to complete the application in each vessel, using airless equipment.
The thin and lightweight Mascoat Marine-DTM Thermal Insulating Coating provided the designers the extra space needed for the installation of the heavy electronic equipment in pilot houses and control rooms of the 3 vessels. Most importantly, it eliminated condensation which, in main cases, is the cause that damages such expensive equipment. The quality controls of the Shipyard and of the Hellenic Fire Brigade were very impressed by the final result. Alkyonis Co was invited to the headquarters of the HFB in Athens in order to present in detail, all the Mascoat coatings and discuss potential future applications. Syros Shipyards Neorion Yachts is the oldest and the 3rd largest Shipyard in Greece
Among other activities, this shipyard is specialized in the construction of fast vessels and mega-yachts. In 2005, the Shipyard delivered two of the largest superyachts ever constructed in Greece, the 280ft twin vessels ‘My Alysia’ (awarded in Boat Show Int Awards 2006 in Monaco) and ‘My Delma’ (ex Annaliesse). Mr. Sikoutris reassured us that Mascoat Marine-DTM will be specified in their future projects.
Designed to save space, expand design options and streamline watercraft, Mascoat Marine – DTM is a high-tech, protective coating proven to insulate and prevent condensation. While traditional insulation is bulky (35-50mm thick), Mascoat products add only 0,5 to 2 mm to yacht walls and floors. In addition, Mascoat’s lightweight formulation can significantly reduce vessel weight.
If your target is to reduce the noise levels inside your vessel, then please also refer to our sound damping coating, Mascoat Sound Control-dB. Mascoat Sound Control – dB is a fast applied, lightweight compared to sound damping tiles, coating which is quickly applied to the vessel’s structure and main technical areas such as engine rooms, stabilizers, blow thrusters etc. It meets IMO/SOLAS guidelines and eliminates the risk of air and humidity entrapment. The coating’s technology minimizes loud vibration due to structural translation and mechanical output, providing a much safer and comfortable environment for passengers and crew.
Mascoat’s marine coatings are approved by the largest regulating bodies such as: DNV, Lloyds, ABS, USCG, Rina etc.
